An Orissa Rajya Sabha MP's behind the scenes report

Dear All,

As some of you might know, yesterday the entire NDA
opposition MP's in the Rajya Sabha walked out after an evasive reply by the government to the NIS matter raised during Zero Hour by myself and Shri Rudra Pani (BJP). After that, Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, Sushma Swaraj and I spoke to the media, accompanied by all present Orissa MP's of the Rajya Sabha.

However, not only the government, but also the left parties were highly embarrassed by the development preceding the walkout, when all proof of the UGC's commitment for NIS in Orissa was shown by me, alongwith plenty of documentary evidence. It became so unbearable for the treasury benches, that Sitaram Yechury of the CPI(M) actually stood up and associated with my motion that the NIS must come up in Bhubaneswar ! All this is in the records of the proceedings (transcripts to be posted on my website later this week).

The good news (?) is of today, when a highly placed government
personality indicated to me that they were re-thinking the issue and that we might expect an announcement in a few days that the NIS will come up in Bhubaneswar, after all. This was not just a casual comment, but told to me in the presence of the Honourable Vice President of India, Shri Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, who is the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and has strongly supported our cause, openly saying that the injustice to Orissa must be corrected.

This was further reiterated to me later by one of the eminent nominated members of the Rajya Sabha, Shri MS Gill (former Chief Election Commissioner), who indicated that he participated in a
behind-the-scenes discussion with the relevant minister yesterday,
where it was pointed out that the Orissa MP's would simply not allow the matter to die down until justice was done.

It will greatly help the cause if some of you now write to the Hon'ble Vice President, which will strengthen his hands to keep the pressure on the goverment.

With warm regards to all,
